BREWSTER Drew Dorflinger had only modest expectations heading into the 38th annual Brewster Bear Cross Country Invitational on Saturday at Brewster High School.

The senior from Pleasantville was hoping to finish with a time of under 16 minutes. He expressed surprise when he was told his time of 15 minutes, 41.26 seconds was only two seconds off of the meet record set by Byram Hills’ Max Kasak in 2006.

“I can’t say I was expecting to run 15:40, but training has been going well,” he said. “I was really happy when I looked up at the clock at the last 100 meters. I just put my head down and really kicked it in.”

Bearing through cold, windy conditions and a rain-soaked ground, he also led his Pleasantville team to the first overall spot in the first boys race, with a total of 46 points. Mamaroneck, led by second-place Samuel Morton (15:56.36) came second in the team scores with a total of 76 points. Haldane was third with 113 points.

The girls first race was won by Lourdes’ Caroline Timm with a time of 18:21.41. Carmel’s Sessions Jade finished in second place with a time of 18:49.12, with Rye’s Natalie Weiner coming in third place with a time of 19:00.54. Canton (Connecticut) won the team trophy with 55 points, Carmel came second at 59 points and Brewster took third place with 66 points.

John Jay won the second girls race with a team score of 35 points, with Pippa Nutall placing second (18:30.55) and Kathryn Nohilly finishing fourth (18:55.61) leading the way. Briarcliff finished second in the team standings with a total of 71 points, highlighted by Caroline Pennacchio’s third-place finish (18:32.96).

Mamaroneck, coming off of winning the Gressler Invitational at White Plains last week, came third in the team scores with a total of 104 point. Lauren Chapey ran the best overall time in either of the two races with a time of 17:56.72. It was the third straight time the senior has won the invitational.

“This is a personal best for me, so it was really exciting,” Chapey said. “After the 400 or 800, I kind of took off and I was my own. My legs were feeling really great and I just kept pushing.”

Brewster won the second boys race with 77 points, with Fox Lane and Horace Greeley coming in second and third place, respectively, with team scores of 120 and 145 points.

Brewster senior Kevin Hazelwood, who barely had time to warm up for the race due to taking the SATs earlier in the day, won the second race with a time of 15:45.20. With the meet held on his home turf, it was especially special to him.

“It’s great that I ran the time, but I’m kind of disappointing I was two seconds slower than last year; I really wanted to break the record and lay waste to this course,” Hazelwood said. “It’s awesome that I could win it three years out of my high school career.”
